Story[]
Long Story[]
Time That Erodes Young Love has just sent his silvery pseudo-dragon familiar, Vandrian, down into the pit in search of Briar. Briar is hanging upside-down by the leg, unconscious. Time That Erodes Young Love (who I'll call TTEYL, because, I mean come on) can see through Vandrian's eyes, and relays this information to the others. Fortunately, this is a magical world, so Daggie is able to use the spell Entangle to create vine-like tentacles that wrastle Briar out of the pit. Hurray!
Briar awakens, seemingly un-affected by the strange experience that befell them right before they... befell into the pit. They do, however, have a small bump on her head, what we in the medical industry call, an owie. Pegwing's tiny human companion, Bennett, happens to be a doctor, so he dons a tiny doctor's outfit (complete with a tiny little light/mirror thing), and climbs up to examine it. The small surgeon applies an eensy bit of ointment to the bump, which... does nothing. Well, you tried, Bennett.
Briar tells the rest of the party about the diary they found, about their own life, but that they don't remember writing. This prompts Faize to suggest that Briar might have a secret admirer, a thought that Briar considers. They don't, however, have the diary, as it was dropped down the pit. So, TTEYL sends Vandrian down to retrieve it. The pit is seemingly endless. The deeper Vandrian flies, the deeper the pit seems to go. There's no bottom, and Vandrian seems to not be making any progress. TTEYL feels a strange unease, and commands the dragon to return, empty handed.
But how deep does this pit go, really? To answer that, TTEYL chucks a small cracker down the pit (that he fiendishly had stolen from Briar). It never seems to hit the ground. That's a tiny little thing, though, so Daggie horks a heavy, silver wash basin into it. It clangs noisy against the walls as it bounces around, but that slowly fades into nothingness. No bottom is ever encountered...
Elsewhere around the room, there's a large, 10x10 ft tapestry. It depicts a group of human-like figures, knelt down and praying, near the edge of a cliff. At the end of the cliff, more figures seem to falling over the edge, into the maw of some massive, unknowable creature. The mouth is circular, and has sharp teeth jutting out. And at the bottom of the tapestry is text, written in Infernal. It says "The Embodiment. The Eater of the Condemned. Afterlife."
As if things weren't bad enough, Shaw enters the room, and announces a problem out in the hall. The problem is that the broken wall that they entered this place through, is no longer broken. It's a solid wall, meaning that they are trapped! There's no way out! What are we gonna do? TTEYL has the answer. He blasts the wall with magical energy. This does chip away at the wall, but this only reveals that the wall is... just a wall. There's nothing behind it. No cracks leading back to Deephome. They really are stuck.
Well, the only way out is through, as they say. And so, the party re-focuses on their current situation. The hallway that they are in has a door leading to that strange bedroom, and at the other end is a large atrium-like area. There's also another hallway, with another door, leading to, perhaps, another bedroom. The end of that hall curves off to somewhere else. The most intriguing place is the atrium, so Daggie moves on ahead, encouraged by Faize. She casts Heroism on his as he enters.
The atrium is lush with flora and fungi. Another door lies at the far end, with a continuation of the hallway. Daggie, very knowledgeable in the field of mushrooms, is delighted to find that this room is full of them. Some of which he knows, and some of which he doesn't. One of those unknown ones is blue-green, with red spots on it, and he's able to use his knowledge of the fungal world to interpret that if he touches it, it will release spores on him, which would probably be very dangerous. For some reason, he touches it, and it releases spores on him, which are probably very dangerous. He actually seems fine, though, and is quickly distracted by another mush. This one has four heads on it. It is the mythical Clover Mushroom, which grants a lucky boon to whomsteverst should consume it.
Excited by this rare find, Daggie calls in his friends, who all rush in to find him surrounded in a cloud of spores. Briar is also well learned, fungally, and knows this is a bad time. They know that there are some mushrooms that are capable of releasing spores capable of hallucinogenic properties. No reason to bring it up, just saying. They warn Daggie not to eat the clover mush while covering their mouth with a cloak. Pegwing decides to up the badassery by about a million percent, and whips out a FLAMING SWORD!!! He swings it around, burning away some of the spores, and is able to gain some visibility. This allows him to see another figure amongst the spores with them. He calls out to this figure, who responds in a Dwarven voice. He doesn't seem to know where he is, or how he got here. This appears to be one of the missing miners they were sent here to rescue. What's more, there's someone else with them, another missing miner. One of them seems to be named Beller, even though they don't think that's their real name.
Suddenly, a vine-like tentacle emerges from the ground and strikes at Daggie, before retreating back into the ground. More tentacles make their presence known, and now, all around the party are masses of shapes. But they're all actually one creature, some kind of mushroomy Undertale-style Amalgam creature. It's holding "Beller" up by one of the tentacles. Spooky stuff. There is a brief, but fierce battle. Everyone gets a turn. Briar strikes with their Rapier of Warning. Faize casts buff spells (Sanctuary and Aid) on her allies. The creature tries to whip everyone with vines, but can't hit Briar (because of Faize's buffs). Beller gets thrown aside, while TTEYL strikes it with 2 Eldritch Blasts. Pegwing, continuing the badassery, uses his Flame Tongue Greatsword against it. Finally, Daggie is able to finish the thing off with a Chill Touch. And the battle is won.
Short[]
Daggie is able to pull Briar out of the pit they fell in, and they ponder its depth for a while before turning to notice a strange tapestry nearby. It seems to show a group of people making a religious sacrifice to a creature with a gaping maw, perhaps a Leviathan? Damn, makes you think. Anyway, they find that their way back to the Scotsdale Mining Company is blocked off, and then move to the atrium where they find a hypnotized (?) Beller being held by a tentacle creature. They kill it, and rescue Beller.
Trivia[]
- Briar uses mostly they/them pronouns.
- Bennet is a doctor. A tiny doctor.
- Vandrian hates Bennet.
- Time That Erodes Young Love can see through Vandrian's eyes.
- Faize (and maybe Time That Erodes Young Love) can read Infernal.
- Bennet has not spoken. That's not to say he doesn't speak at all. Just that he has not spoken.
- Pegwing has a FLAMING SWORD that he keeps hidden behind his peg wings. That's awesome.
- This is later revealed to be a Flame Tongue Greatsword. Badass.
- Briar is a Swashbuckler. This means that they have to be, at the very least, level 3, because it's a new Rogue Archetype from Xanathar's Guide to Everything. Also, they talk about the feature Rakish Audacity, which states they don't need advantage to use Sneak Attack. That feature starts at level 3, so we don't have any evidence that they are further than that.
- Tim later states that they are level 5. Here I was, doin' all this research, like a fool.
- TTEYL doesn't breath. Just fyi.
- Pegwing is a Fighter. His use of the Distracting Strike Maneuver indicates that he is a Battle Master.
