Story[]
Long Story[]
A new story begins!
Five ago, there was remarkable find uncovered by a Deephome mining expedition. Deep underground, below the Razorback Mountains, an opening was discovered, that appeared to lead to a secret, underground city! Despite being so close to the Dwarven cities of Deephome, this place didn't appear to be Dwarven in nature. It's structure, it's masonry, all appeared to be... different somehow. It was also deeper underground than where the Dwarves typically reside. An expedition team was sent out, to explore the area. But, they never came back...
Because of all of this, a wealthy mining Dwarf named Ridley, sent out invitations, to hire a small team of adventurers, to make their way into the mysterious city, find whatever there is to find, and retrieve the missing Dwarven team. These adventurers were: Daggie Chookers, Faize, Pegwing Blackfeather, and Time That Erodes Young Love and his assistance/hostage Briar.
These noble heroes were met by an envoy, consisting of two Dwarves: Gorman and Shaw. They claimed to be from the Scottsdale Mining Company, and gave them a scroll with the company's emblem on it: a hammer and chisel. The scroll detailed the mission at hand, and explained that the language found in the city didn't match any known Dwarven languages. The party was to be paid half of their payment on arrival to the city, and the other half once they've finished their exploration. After reading all of this, each of the party members were teleported to the Scottsdale Mining Company's mining center, where they spent the night.
They wake up, the next morning, on slabs. But nice ones! Bunk-slabs, actually, and they all introduce themselves. Time That Erodes Young Love (who insists that you call him by his full name), is a fussy, elegant man in a strange mask, and he demands a drink. His assistant, a Shifter named Briar, makes him one out of spite, mostly to shut him up. Daggie politely requests some of the drink, but is denied. Instead, Faize, a cleric, gives him a potion that she threw together from some random scraps. It makes his mouth go numb. All of this commotion awakes an Aarakocra with two pegged wings. Named Pegwing Blackfeather, the Aarakocra is accompanied by a tiny man named Bennet, who is jealous of Briar being small. Briar, being a small mouse-like creature, is initially afraid of Pegwing, a large bird, but soon, the two bond over their shared love of bread. But not crackers. Don't you dare offer Pegwing any crackers. He hates that.
Anyway, with everyone well acquainted now, Gorman and Shaw accompany them through the mining halls, and into a dining halls. Everyone's having a grand old time. There's tons of food, and drinks, and raucous-making. General talk in the room is about the missing miners. Soon, the party is met by their hire-er, Ridley. He's a finely dressed Dwarf, who greets them amiably, and tells them of their mission. His main priority is the retrieval of the three miners that have gone missing, and of their safety. He appoints Gorman and Shaw to accompany them into the city, though he himself will be too busy handling things back here to go himself. Finally, he tells them they are free to keep any treasures they may find along the way.
The party is led to some advanced looking mining carts, that move on their own along the tracks. Deeper into the mines they go, eventually coming to a stop at a cracked and broken wall. Beyond it, they can see, is the mysterious city. It does look immediately different than everything else the party has seen thus far. The stone work is much finer than that of the Dwarves. Sensing some tension in the group, Faize gives a magical bond to Pegwing, Briar, and Daggie, that gives them an extra d4 to add to attack rolls, ability checks, or saving throws, as long as they are within 30ft of each other. As thanks, Daggie gives her a porcini mushroom. Pegwing offers an eye patch to anyone who wants one. Briar accepts.
Finally, they enter through the wall, and venture into the cavern. This city is very clean. As the party moves through the halls, they can see doors leading off to various rooms. At the end of one hall is, what appears to be a large atrium of sorts, with trees and other flora. Before this larger room, however, the hallway has another, smaller door, inside of which is a bedroom. The bed is large, and the furniture is wooden, and very ornate. Everything in this room cries of opulence, so the party heads inside to explore.
Faize stands near the door, making sure to prop it open so they aren't trapped inside. Daggie rummages around and finds many things, including some nice clothing, wall tapestries, and an ink and quill set, made of gold, with a fine bird feather, which he tosses aside. It is caught by Time That Erodes Young Love's pseudo-dragon, named (I think) Vandrian. There's also a silver wash basin, carved with a religious scene of some sort.
Briar finds a leather bound tome next to the bed. It looks familiar to them. There's an insignia on the front, that looks like a tooth. They're drawn to it, and reach out to touch it. It's soft, like fine leather. They pick it up. The book, they know, is from their past. They open it up, and realize that it's a diary. Their diary. But, they don't remember ever writing a diary. Flipping through it, they find it talks about a twin that they don't remember having. This twin was, according to the book, a big part of their life. It says that they were born as conjoined twins, but a traveling clerical group was able to use magic to separate them from their twin. That's when Briar notices a scar along their side, that they assume to be from where they were attached to the twin. They're rattled by this, and have to sit down, on the bed. As soon as they do, they fall right through! They're falling and falling. They look up to see a pinpoint of light of the room above, and someone hanging from a sheet, upside down. It's them. Briar. And then, they black out.
Up in the room, the others see Briar flip through the book, entranced, and rub at their side. Then, they sits down on the bed, and fall into it. It must have been a trap. Time That Erodes Young Love sends his pseudo-dragon Vandrian down into the hole, where it finds Briar, hanging upside down from a tangled sheet, unconscious.
Short[]
A group of adventurers are hired by a Dwarf name Ridley to investigate the appearance of a strange city beneath Deephome, and the disappearance of a previous Dwarven expedition into the city. Although tense at first, the party decides to work together to find the missing miners. Escorted by Gorman and Shaw, the party descends into the mines, and begins searching the mysterious city. In a fancy looking bedroom, Briar discovers a diary of their that they don't remember writing, that references a twin they don't remember having. They then fall into a trap, where they have an out of body experience, seeing themselves in the trap.
Trivia[]
- Time That Erodes Young Love's favorite drink is a red wine with lemon.
- Faize casts Guidance on Time That Erodes Young Love.
- Fred makes Briar rolls a "Stress" Saving Throw. Stress is not a stat in vanilla DnD 5e, so this is most likely a homebrew mechanic created by Fred. Cool!
