Missing in Action | Bakery Business |
I can already smell the fresh baked goods in the air as we approach the town of Brookwillow. It has been so long since we have had a chance to eat a good meal or even relax. We deserve this little rest and we can put the whole treason stuff behind us for a few hours at least.
Story[]
Long Story[]
The party, traveling with The Big Top Traveling Circus and Magnificent Menagerie, has just arrived in the sleepy little town of Brookwillow. Nestled between the "Willow Woods", and "Danden Lake", Brookwillow is about 2-3 times bigger than Rimeford, itself pretty small and quaint. Farms and fields surround the city.
They are also joined by Big Bo, actually Emperor Beauregard in disguise. He was dressed as a clown, but now isn't. Now, he's just completely shirtless. As a massively buff dude, Bo is going to stand out in town, so he elects to stay behind with the caravan. Also present is Dick Goodie, who will be coming with them.
As they are getting ready to leave, however, the door to their caravan opens a tiny bit, then closes again. At first, it seems like nothing. Then, however, a tiny little rat comes running up T'Chuck's leg, a small piece of parchment in its mouth. R'Oarc is immediately taken with this rat, and pulls out her new Rat Flute. She goes to toot that flute, but is stopped by the rat. It holds out a paw, expectantly. It seems to want a payment. T'Chuck hands the rat a single copper piece, which the rat takes, grudgingly. It seemed to want more, but accepts the copper piece anyway. In return, the rat passes T'Chuck the paper, then scurries over to R'Oarc. She feeds him a sausage roll, which makes him her friend for life! R'Oarc and the rat settle on the name "Rathanial". As she bathes him, T'Chuck checks out the letter, which is from Ratma Ritmo!
It says: "I gotta bunch of OT up my ass, so it's taking me longer to get to Brookewillow than I had planned. I should be there in a few days. Keep your heads down."
Okay, so it seems like they have some time to kill. Off into the city they go! It's a nice little town, with a wide variety of shops for them to check out. Among them are:
- "Greenfield's Produce"
- "Timber's Edge", a lumberyard and carpentry shop
- "Willowbrook Apothecary" (later referred to as "Elara's Apothecary")
- "Mountainview Bakery"
- "Brookwillow General Store"
- "The Golden Grain Tavern"
- "Silverleaf Tailoring"
- "Ironwood Armory", a weapon-shop
- "The Gleaming Gem", a jewler's shop
- "The Whispering Willow Inn"
- "Brookwillow Stables"
- "Sylvan Herbalists"
- "He Who Smelt It", a blacksmith's shop
Where to first? Since it's around lunchtime, the party wants to go to the bakery first. They are stopped, however, by Barnabas Rumbletoes. After passive aggressively agreeing that they don't need to help the caravan set up or anything, he warns them to stay away from the Golden Grain Tavern. It's "a little seedy", and probably not a safe place to be hanging around. This, naturally, makes them immediately want to go to the tavern, but it's a little early for that. They stick to their initial plan of going to the bakery, but will be visiting the tavern later.
The smell of delicious bread being baked hits them before they even open the door. It hits them even harder when they do. The party is impressed by the wide array of meat pies available: Leek and Onion, Chicken Curry, Steak and Kidney, among others. Out from behind the counter pops a little Halfling, who greets them, and tells them of their specials for the day: Elven Honey Loaf, Spiced Pumpkin Bread, and some delicious turnovers. There's also a new recipe the Halfling is trying out, Dwarven Nut Buscuits, which he offers the party, on the house. Unable to decide on what to get, the party orders "pretty much one of everything". This ends up being a sampler platter, which is only 3 silver pieces. They decide to order a second one, which is rounded up to 5 silver? I think that's in addition to the first 3 silver, so 8 silver total?
After some banter, T'Chuck asks the un-named Halfling about the Golden Grain. He says NOT TO GO THERE. It's shady, and there are ne'er-do-wells there. No one likes ne'er-do-wells! With no more business to do here, the party leaves, headed to their next destination. Except for one Screech Echo. He stays behind. He returns to speak with the Halfling, and asks several questions about his business. Screech learns that it would cost about 10 gold to buy out the entire inventory in the bakery. It would also cost about 35 gold to buy (or rent?) a wagon, with which to carry all of said inventory. Screech is very interested in buying out the store, perhaps in an attempt to sell everything elsewhere for a profit. However, the Halfling tells him that the pastries last about a day. It would be more cost-effective for Screech to instead hire the Halfling personally. That way, he can make the pastries for Screech, and travel along with him. He even offers to bring all of his own equipment and tools. His fee would be a measly 2 gold per day (which is 1 gold more than they are paying him now). Screech haggles the price down to 1.5 gold/day, and the deed is done.
Screech returns to the others. T'Chuck is initially suspicious of what Screech may have been up to, but he does appear to be carrying anything. So, he didn't buy out the store. Odd. He ignores this. And also farts, canonically.
The party's next stop is the weapon shop, The Ironwood Armory. R'Oarc is interested in acquiring some kind of weapon that's better than her measly rapier. Perhaps a crossbow, but like, a fancy one, that's maybe shaped like a bass guitar! That way, she can be playing, and attack someone from range, without anyone knowing it was her! She asks this of the weapon-smith, Captain Aldin (a "big golden human man", with a large mustache), who agrees to make it for her. It will cost 75 gold pieces (a regular crossbow is only 25 gold), and will take about 3 days to make. Screech also makes a special request. He hands over his Bear Claw weapons, and asks for them to be re-made to resemble talons of some kind. Specifically, talons of a Philippine Eagle. They prey on monkeys. This, too, will take 3 days. Before leaving, T'Chuck buys 4 throwing hammers. They are 2 gold each, but T'Chuck pays 9 gold.
The party leaves the weapons shop, headed toward the Willowbrook Apothecary. But, as they are exiting, they don't believe what happens next...
Short[]
After receiving word from Ratma Ritmo that she will be joining them in a few days, the party enters the town of Brookwillow. There are a ton of shops to explore here. Screech hires the local Halfling baker, but doesn't tell the others. They all go to the weapon shop. R'Oarc orders a custom crossbow in the shape of a bass guitar, and Screech has his Bear Claws changed to the talons of an eagle. These weapons will take 3 days to be ready.
Trivia[]
- Big Bo is weirded out by J'Michael, as he doesn't seem to be a normal griffon. The party tells him that J'Michael was bitten by a radioactive spider.
- Dick Goodie is a sharper cookie that Big Bo, and questions if J'Michael is even a real griffon. What if he were some kind of other creature, like, say... a Wyvern? The others deflect this question. T'Chuck pays him a gold piece to STFU.
- R'Oarc invents some impromptu contraption for her Rat Flute to hang from. It's like a break away lanyard, but made of intestines for some reason. To keep them from drying out, she has to wet them every three days. Gross.
- R'Oarc currently has a drum, a dulcimer, and another pan flute, in addition to her Rat Flute.
- R'Oarc is going to spend some of her down time making a little vest for Rathanial.
- The streets of Brookwillow are made of cobblestone, and the buildings are made of wood.
- Dick Goodie has never been in a bakery before.
- At the bakery, R'Oarc wants to order the Steak and Kidney pie, while Selene is interested in the sweet buns.
- Upon entering Brookwillow, the party saw a hill with some Halfling homes. Brookwillow seems to have a large Halfling community.
- After discussing the difference between a circus and a carnival, the party decides that The Big Top is actually a "traveling festival".
- Apparently, the cast wrote down a list of magic items they want:
- Nika asked for "a business license", and something called "The Pearl of Power".
- Jennifer may have also had "The Pearl of Power" on her list.
- On Tim's list was "Peepee and Poopoo", which he claims was written by someone else. Same for "Hogs". He does admit to writing "pussy lol jk". He also wrote down "One Healing Potion". Aim a little higher, my dude.
- Michael confirms that one of the items on someone's list was in the pile of trash, back in the looters camp from a few episodes ago. But no one bothered to look.
- You could found a kingdom with about 10k gold.
- Tim makes a comment that T'Chuck is a deserter from the war, a fact that I'm not sure if we knew or not. If not, there you go.
- Typically, in a single day, the bakery sells about 70% of what they make.
- It's deep in summer at this point, despite it having been spring a few short episodes ago.
- Captain Aldin is married.
- At the weapons shop, T'Chuck asks Aldin what he can tell him about the Mace of Regnier. Aldin has never seen anything like it. But, if T'Chuck were willing to sell it, it would go for 1,000 gold pieces. Though, Aldin would need to have the OT examine it, as it appears to be magic. T'Chuck elects not to sell the mace.
- Aldin's shop sells two kinds of arrows: regular and silvered. He says they cost 100 gold for 10 arrows, but doesn't clarify if that's the regular or silvered kind. I assume that has to be silvered.
- The crossbow R'Oarc requests is a heavy crossbow, not a light crossbow.
