This new, jacked clown has the crew in a sort of tizzy. Are they a secret bad guy trying to sabotage the circus? Perhaps a rival circus has planted a rogue actor to derail us before we ever reach Farholde?! Well, buckle up because their identity and intentions must be unmasked!

Story[]

Long Story[]

It's lunchtime for The Big Top Traveling Circus and Magnificent Menagerie. Soon, the caravan will be heading out, embarking on their journey to Brookwillow. But, before they go, there's the little matter of Bobo, the new clown who, according to The Oriole, has been loosening lugnuts on all the train cars. That's not good. The party wonders if it would be a good idea to go and talk to him. R'Oarc has been pining after Bobo, ever since hearing about how jacked he is. But, she's not a clown, so they have nothing in common. What to do?

R'Oarc goes to visit the clowns, and approaches the smallest one in the circus. Her name is Jesterina Sparklefizz, and she tells R'Oarc that, the only way to become a clown, is to go through a Clown Initiation. There is to be... a Honk-Off! At first, it sounds like Sparklefizz is not the one who decides who will be a clown, and who won't be. But then, after some clown-based shenanigans, R'Oarc appears to best Sparklefizz, who removes her clown nose, and offers it to R'Oarc. That means she's in! R'Oarc is officially a clown!

After casting Polymorph on T'Chuck, R'Oarc is able to look around, and finds a big dude, over 6 ft tall. He's taking a pickaxe to some rocks on the side of the road. As she approaches, she sees that's a super buff Half-Elf, with long blonde hair, faded with streaks of white with age. His beard is scraggly, his shirt is tight, and his sweat is all over him. R'Oarc is sweating, too, for different reasons. She attempts to make conversation, but when Bobo turns around to face her, it's with a blank expression. She tries to ask him about the lugnuts, but Bobo only replies, hollowly, "You'll never make it to Frostmount." So, that's pretty spooky. He then turns back to his rocks.

Frostmount, they all know, is a larger city on the western coast. But currently, the circus is traveling east. What's the meaning of this? Another thing Bobo is saying is "Clown Time", and when R'Oarc asks him what that is, he shows her. From his bag, he produces a puffy, rainbow-colored wig, and puts it on. She tries to get more information from him, such as where he's from, but he doesn't seem to be able to give a straight answer. First, he says he's from Farhold, the capitol city, then "corrects" himself, and says he's from "the woods".

R'Oarc decides to bring Bobo back to the others with her, but first, they have to stop by the clown car to get Bobo's stuff. The inside of the car is, well, it's kind of what you would expect from a clown car. There's silly string covering everything, balloons, streamers, pie tins, and seltzer bottles laying all around. There's also the unrelenting sounds of honking, just, coming from everywhere. It sounds terrible, to be honest. Bobo picks up his sack, and when he does, R'Oarc hears the sounds of metalic clanking. He shows her what's inside. Plate metal armor, made from some sort of silvery material. He refuses to put it on, though. He says that "Anvon" told him not to wear these things anymore. Alright, something's definitely up with this guy. R'Oarc returns to the party's wagon.

T'Chuck returns to Hobgoblin form again, and casts Zone of Truth, so they can all have an honest conversation. Unfortunately, Bobo passes his Charisma check, so T'Chuck just dismisses the Zone. They'll have to do this the old fashioned way. Bobo doesn't know how long he's been at the circus. All that he knows is, the last he remembers, he was in Frostmount, to the east. And what about this mysterious Anvon he had mentioned? The party thinks back on the famous Anvon's they might have heard about: There was Anvon Liyra, who was a ruler thousands of years ago. There was also Anvon Moonshadow, a royal who came from the east, and "conquered lands". And, there was Anvon Whispermouse. He was one of the adventurers who helped kill the Last Dragon, along with Ratma Ritmo, many years ago.

With this, Selene begins putting the pieces together. Emperor Beauregard is also a Half-Elf, who was one of those adventurers, along with Anvon and Ratma. And now that Selene really gets a good look at him, Bobo looks an awful lot like the Emperor. And he did say he was from Farhold initially. Could it be that Bobo is actually Beau Beau? As in, Emperor Beauregard?!

Bobo gets nervous. He claims that "Durian" is the emperor, not him. He seems to be telling the truth, or at the very least, believes what he's saying, so something magical must be going on here. T'Chuck casts Lesser Restoration on Bobo. Suddenly, the large clown's mind clears. He perks up, and seems to realize where he is for the first time. He asks who the others are, and they re-introduce themselves. He asks if they've made it to Frostmount, and tells them that he's in a lot of danger. Apparently, there's a plot to kill him, and he was forced to escape. And Durian? Durian will never be the Emperor. Bobo, actually Big Beau, IS the Emperor!

Short[]

R'Oarc becomes a clown, and goes to speak with Bobo. He's an oddball, for sure. Something seems to be up with him, he keeps making references to "Anvon" and "Durian". R'Oarc brings him back to the others, and after T'Chuck casts Lesser Restoration on him, we learn the truth. Bobo is actually Big Bo, AKA Emperor Beauregard!

Trivia[]

  • It is, apparently, the 100th day of the party's adventures together.
  • R'Oarc is so smitten with Bobo (before meeting him), that she's even forgotten about The Jokester.
  • We last heard of Frostmount back in Episode 95, where we learned that that's where The Oriole was from. It's hundreds of miles from where they are now.
  • Anvon Whispermouse was played by Mike Bachmann.
  • Episode 0 was about 50 years ago.
